The First Reading is followed by singing or reading a Psalm, with a response made by the congregation between stanzas.

The Psalms are from a book in the Old Testament, containing prayers and hymns written for use in personal prayer and public worship.

It is intended that the Psalm serve as a reflection or meditation on the content of the First Reading.
