Presentation Lantern Center seeking Executive Director

Mission: The Presentation Lantern Center (PLC) is a drop-in center offering hospitality, educational opportunities and advocacy to adult immigrants, especially women, who are striving to better their lives. Sponsored by the Sisters of the Presentation, Dubuque, Iowa, the center is a non-profit organization.


Job Title: Executive Director


Reports to: Board of Trustees


Summary: The Executive Director administers and coordinates all internal operational aspects and business affairs of Presentation Lantern. The Executive Director assists the Board of Trustees in the development of organizational policies and goals to support Presentation Lantern’s Mission, operations, and growth. The Executive Director collaborates with staff, the Board of Trustees and with volunteers and other members of the community to achieve the mission. The Executive Director must possess outstanding leadership, communication and organizational skills and a willingness to work a flexible schedule.


Salary & Benefits


  • Salary determined with Board of Trustees
  • 40 – 40 plus hours per week, including frequent evening work (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and occasional work on the weekends
  • Majority of hours to be worked between 8 am – 5 pm, Mon, Wed and Fri and between 11 am – 7:30 pm Tues and Thurs to correspond with PLC’s open hours
  • PLC vacation time includes 1 week around Christmas/New Year’s holidays, three weeks in August in addition to the following holidays: Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Thanksgiving Day. PLC’s vacation time is also the employee’s vacation time.
  • Paid leave time afforded at 10 days/year (80 hours) to be used for a combination of sick, vacation or personal time. Leave time to be scheduled by coordinating with PLC staff and through notification of Board President.
  • Employee will be paid bi-weekly throughout the year, based on yearly salary
  • Health insurance contribution provided if needed
  • Paid parking provided between the hours of 6 am – 6 pm
  • Flexible scheduling available, providing business needs are met
  • Continuing training is provided
  • Mileage reimbursed for business-related trips made in excess of 15 miles outside the city at then-current IRS rate.


Primary Responsibilities:



  1. Give priority to the primary mission of the education of adults in language and citizenship
  2. Provide general office management
  3. Provide support for the Business Coordinator (BC) as needed
  4. Orient, supervise and evaluate PLC personnel
  5. Continue strategic planning with the Board of Trustees and implementation with the staff
  6. Build and maintain partnerships with other non-profits, related agencies, and local community
  7. Delegate responsibilities as appropriate
  8. Report to the Board of Trustees and prepare a regular Director’s Report to the Board of


  1. Maintain a hospitable atmosphere
  2. Collaborate with the Education and Scheduling Coordinator (ESC) in Education program

design and implementation

  1. Collaborate with the ESC (and BC where appropriate) to manage and train volunteers,

including student volunteers

  1. In conjunction with the ESC, supervise student volunteers and service learners
  2. Lead staff and volunteers in student and volunteer recruitment efforts
  3. Coordinate the citizenship program
  4. Coordinate the hospitality and advocacy program efforts
  5. Collaborate with the PLC Finance Committee on employee salaries and benefits
  6. Assist in the recruiting, hiring, and termination of PLC staff in collaboration with the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees
  7. Work with Payroll/Accounting firm to authorize payroll when required
  8. Assist as needed all standing Board committees
  9. Coordinate direct assistance and referral efforts, with Lantern staff and volunteers for immigrant/international adult students and drop-ins
  10. Develop policies and procedures with staff and Board of Trustees
  11. Coordinate fundraising and grant writing
  12. General oversight of the programs that achieve the mission of the PLC
  13. Make sure that an annual budget is in place prior to each fiscal year
  14. Make sure that reports required by the Internal Revenue Service are submitted on time
  15. Other such duties as assigned by the Board of Trustees and for the successful operations of the PLC
  16. Transport clients/students/volunteers on occasion (mileage outside the city reimbursed)


Marketing and Outreach

  1. Keep the mission central in all communications, marketing, and public speaking
  2. Oversee publications and communications
  3. Continue to build partnerships in the local community
  4. Maintain ongoing communication with the Sisters of the Presentation and the wider community
  5. Collaborate with the Marketing and Development Committee
  6. Plan regular public relations events


Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
  • Advocacy experience and passion for social justice
  • Fluent in English, additional second language preferred
  • Demonstrated successful staff management experience
  • Non-profit experience
  • Fundraising experience
  • Volunteer management experience
  • Experience with company/organization financial reports
  • Preferred past experience as an Executive Director or experience in administration required
  • Preferred experience in teaching or education
  • Preferred experience living / working in another culture
  • Preferred experience working with diverse populations, particularly immigrants
  • Preferred experience with a citizenship program


Knowledge, Skills & Aptitudes

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, especially Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Publisher, PowerPoint and other programs an asset.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills, including ability to speak in plain English so that English as Second Language speakers may easily understand.
  • Proven ability to exhibit professionalism and patience in all communications, both inside and outside of the organization, particularly with other staff, board members, volunteers and immigrants
  • Strong organizational skills, including ability to prioritize tasks in a busy environment
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure, and to use tact in difficult conversations / situations
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of immigrant / student, donor and other sensitive information
  • Passionate about diversity and offering a sense of belonging to immigrants. Desire to continually learn about the immigrant experience, its challenges, factors of migration, immigration law, etc.
  • Commitment to serve any person regardless of nationality, gender, political opinion, sexual orientation, educational/health/economic status, religion, race, and, in particular, English language ability
  • Commitment to the mission of the center, and the mission and values of the Sisters of the Presentation, our sponsoring organization
  • Ability to consistently demonstrate flexibility and navigate unexpected changes gracefully

Other Requirements

  • Holds valid driver’s license and appropriate vehicle registration for personal vehicle
  • Personal vehicle to be used for business needs (mileage reimbursed at IRS rate)

Selection Process

  1. The PLC Board of Trustees’ Employment Committee will review all applications
  2. Committee will determine which candidates will be selected for a phone interview
  3. From this pool, committee will determine which candidates will move forward to an in-person interview
  4. A second in-person interview may be conducted
  5. Committee recommends selected candidate to the Board of Trustees for approval
